Payoffs worth millions to persuade lords to make way for elected chamber

Payoffs totalling millions of pounds will be handed to members of theHouse of Lords to make them quit their seats. Plans for an elected upper house will involve making all the current 704 members redundant — and the old guard want compensation for losing expenses and daily allowances, the Evening Standard has learned.
